One of the main problems with turmeric (extract) is its low bio-availability in the blood plasma due to its low solubility and low permeability. Upon oral intake, as it goes through the digestive system it undergoes rapid biotransformation and eventual excretion. Consequently, high doses of turmeric extract are required to attain significant curcumin levels in the blood plasma. The main reasons contributing to low plasma levels of curcumin thus are poor absorption, rapid metabolism and rapid systemic elimination. A high dose of turmeric could lead to thinning of blood or complaints of the digestive tract.
Increasing the bio-availability of curcumin from turmeric
There are different delivery systems to increase the bio-availability of curcumin from turmeric e.g. combination with various spices and/or oils or micellar forms. These delivery systems are still oral and have to pass the digestive tract.
Hydrogel technology on the other hand is a unique delivery system whereby turmeric extract is offered in lozenge form! The lozenges dissolve slowly in the mouth. Through buccal (mucosal) absorption a high percentage of bio-active curcuminoids along with all other active components available in turmeric directly enters the blood stream. The digestive tract is predominantly avoided.
While a lot of focus is put on the bio-availability of curcumin in the blood stream, very little focus is put on whether the curcumin is bio-active. Curcuma Hydrogel® Pastilles are unique in both aspects. Through buccal (mucosal) absorption a high percentage of bio-active curcuminoids along with all other active components available in turmeric directly enters the blood stream. The digestive tract is predominantly avoided.
